The SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee will hold its official inauguration ceremony on August 11th at the Korea Press Center in Seoul.
The SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee, will annually select an individual or organization, dedicated to world peace and human welfare, and starting from August 2015, award them with the SUNHAK Peace Prize. The prize money, at ₩1 billion won ($1 million dollars USD), is by far the largest amount given by a single award in S.Korea.
Dr. Il-Sik Hong former Chancellor of Korea University has been commissioned as Committee Chairman. Currently there are 12 other committee members including former UN Secretary General Dr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, President of Washington Times Larry Beasley, former Japanese Minister of State for Defense Hon. Ohno Yoshinori, Chief Monk of Bolguksa Temple Jogye Order Venerable Seong-Ta, and President of the Korean Council on Foreign Relations Dr. Tae-Ik Chung, among others.
Chairman Hong Il-Sik revealed that, “the SUNHAK Peace Prize will not just be an award, but play an important role in making sure the continuation of activities for peace are preserved and spread as a culture.
The plan is to receive candidate recommendations from its committee of more than 1,000 members from over 80 countries by this year October, review their eligibility by next year April, and select the final winner.
